How much Refined White Sugar do you Eat?

Today we will take a closer look at refined sugar.  I find it almost quite frightening that so much sugar is being consumed by most everyone.

13-Refined-sugar

Here are some Key Facts taken from the Australian Bureau of Statistics back in 2011-2012.  The scary thing is that it would be worse now rather than better.  It is as follows:

  • In 2011-12, Australians consumed an average of 60 grams of free sugars per day (equivalent to 14 teaspoons of white sugar).
The majority of free sugar intakes comes from added sugars with an average 52 grams (or 12 teaspoons), with 7 grams of free
sugars coming from honey and fruit juice.

Excess sugar leads to so many conditions and is the main reason for the ‘blow out’ of overweight and obese people.  Not from the obvious sugar alone, but from grains that convert to sugar… anyway… more on that later.

Refined sugar is a modern day food.  You wouldn’t need to go back too far in time to find they had no such thing and the main sugar they consumed was found naturally in fruits etc.  We need to stop being caught up in the avalanche of cakes, biscuits, sweets etc etc and move more to how our ancestors ate.  There is much to learn from them.

What’s your story?
Do you have a ‘sweet tooth’ or is it more like ‘sweet teeth’? 🙂
Have you already given the sweet stuff away and save it more for occasions when it is not quite so easy to avoid?
I’d love to hear from you…
