Do you eat Cultured Foods? What are they?
In this lesson we take a look at Cultured Foods and drinks. These foods use the terminology of ‘cultured’ or ‘fermented’ foods interchangeably. Please do not be put off by the term ‘fermented’. This term can relate to something that’s gone off and we shouldn’t eat, and also something that has been allowed to sit and culture good bacteria that is very beneficial to our health.
We eat these kind of foods regularly in the form of yoghurt, chocolate or vinegar for three little examples.
48-Cultured-FoodsIf you can spare the time and are prepared to make some of these foods for yourself and your family at home, you will find it a very rewarding experience. It’s not only a very satisfying experience, but it is a great way to really make sure the family is receiving lots of probiotics in a very natural way.
Yes I know you can take a probiotic tablet but apparently they don’t include near as much as what can be attained through these various foods.
Also something else you will notice is the taste! I have tried store-bought sauerkraut in the past and erk… didn’t like it at all. Years after that I decided to make a small batch for myself and oh, the difference was amazing. It tastes so yummy and is easy to add to my meals to give them extra punch. I love it.
What about drinks?
As far as the drinks are concerned they are a real hit with the family, especially the Water Kefir… that’s the favourite. But Kombucha is very well received also.
You can make some interesting things from Milk Kefir but it’s not always to everyone’s taste. A bit sad though as it’s a powerhouse of goodness.
I like Ginger Switchel because I can make it on the spot with no waiting involved. It makes a lovely interesting drink.
I would encourage you to play around with a few of these drinks and foods as they are a wonderful enhancement to the diet.
Do you culture and foods or drinks at your place? If so, what?
Please share your experiences.
